GREAT LAKE SWIMMERS ANNOUNCE CANADIAN TOUR DATES, SHARE JASON MOLINA COVER VIDEO

Today, Toronto’s indie darlings Great Lake Swimmers are announcing their return to the road for a string of tour dates throughout Canada beginning in June. Tickets for all dates are on sale at www.greatlakeswimmers.com. Full tour dates can be found below.

The JUNO Award nominated and Polaris Music Prize shortlisted band are also sharing their cover of the late Jason Molina’s (Songs: Ohia, Magnolia Electric Co.) “The Dark Don’t Hide It” recorded live for the series The Influences in Utrecht.

“Several years ago we lost Jason Molina, a brilliant songwriter and a powerful voice in the world of independent music,” says lead singer-songwriter Tony Dekker. “I’ve been thinking about his songs a lot lately, especially while reading the book about his life, Riding With The Ghost by Erin Osmon. We had the honour of opening for Magnolia Electric Co. a few times over the years in places as disparate as Austin, Texas and Brussels, Belgium. Jason’s music has always meant a lot to me, as Songs: Ohia, Magnolia Electric Co., and also in his solo albums and collaborations, and it is in regular rotation in our tour van. Our cover of ‘The Dark Don’t Hide It’ by Magnolia Electric Co. is an homage to his influence and the body of work he gave us.”

WATCH AND SHARE “THE DARK DON’T HIDE IT” HERE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kLlM3RpacXM

Great Lake Swimmers also recorded covers of PJ Harvey’s “The Desperate Kingdom Of Love” and the opening track, “The Talking Wind”, from their latest LP, The Waves, The Wake, for The Influences series.

Out now via Nettwerk, The Waves, The Wake was recorded in the 145-year-old Bishop Cronyn Memorial Church and produced by Chris Stringer (Union Sound). On the LP, Dekker decided to challenge himself by writing new music without any acoustic guitar, which has always been his instrumental mainstay. Each song on the album is brought to life in its own distinctive way, using an acoustic palette that includes woodwinds, harp, congas, marimba and pipe organ.

PRAISE FOR GREAT LAKE SWIMMERS

“The Waves, The Wake is a beautiful achievement, rife with rich and varied instrumentation and textures, engaging vocals, and bittersweet, poignant lyrics.”  – Big Takeover

“The shimmer that illuminate such songs as “Mouth of Flames” and “The Open Sea” are contrasted, albeit briefly, in the upbeat tick of “Alone But Not Alone” and the quiet insistence of “Side Effects,” but it’s the acapella “Visions of a Distant World” that best defines the effort overall…melodies that are both elusive and surreal.” – Paste Magazine

“Dekker renews Great Lake Swimmers’ sound while still retaining the atmospheric singing and subtle yet intricate guitar playing that are quintessential to the band. It’s a tricky balance, but Dekker and his sprawling team of contributors pull it off with aplomb.” – Exclaim!

“…magnificently beautiful orchestrations, this instrumentation flourishes thanks to the exquisite acoustics of the 145-year-old church in which the band recorded. Every sound resounds to its fullest potential, filling the building with magnificent auras….The Waves, The Wake is a vibrant display of Dekker and company challenging themselves, even after 15 years.” – Riff Magazine

“…a beautiful, hypnotic track wrapped in a rich, comforting warmth…” – CBC   “’The Talking Wind’ sees a band experimenting with orchestral sounds in a novel ways, and to significant artistic effect.” – Culture Collide

“’Alone But Not Alone’ is a breezy 60s inspired track that’s more than meets the eye” – NOISEY

GREAT LAKE SWIMMERS ANNOUNCE U.S. TOUR DATES FOR FEBRUARY 2019

Fresh off celebrating their 15th anniversary, Canadian indie folk act Great Lake Swimmers are proud to announce a continued run of U.S. tour dates slated for February 2019. Kicking off in Michigan the tour will take them through the Midwest concluding in Columbus, Ohio. A full list of current dates can be found below. Check out www.greatlakeswimmers.com for the latest routing.

Over seven albums, multiple EPs, live broadcasts, and reissues, the Toronto-based project led by singer-songwriter Tony Dekker has established itself as one a seminal indie folk act in their native Canada and beyond. The CBC has called them “a national treasure” while their music has taken them around the world, sharing a sound that is at once familiar and distinct, using the tools of folk music as the starting point to delve deeper.

Their latest full-length, ‘The Waves, The Wake’ was received to much acclaim from the likes of Noisey, Paste Magazine, Tiny Mix Tapes, and more. Abandoning the acoustic guitar, this new collection of songs sees the group branching out to include new sounds such as harp, lute, pipe organ, woodwinds, congas and marimbas, alongside the more familiar flecks and chimes of the banjo, piano, and 12-string electric guitar. Mojo dubbed them “Ambient Zen Americana” and Exclaim! has described them as a “cherished blend of folk and orchestral indie pop.”

GREAT LAKE SWIMMERS RELEASE NEW ALBUM THE WAVES, THE WAKE AUGUST 17TH / ALBUM PRE-ORDER AVAILABLE NOW / FALL U.S. TOUR ANNOUNCED WITH ADDITIONAL SHOWS

Great Lake Swimmers are excited to share their latest single, “Alone But Not Alone.” The track premiered via Vice’s Noisey yesterday and is from their new album, The Waves, The Wake, out August 17, 2018 via Nettwerk. Recorded in the 145-year-old Bishop Cronyn Memorial Church and produced by Chris Stringer (Union Sound), lead singer-songwriter Tony Dekker decided to challenge himself by writing new music without any acoustic guitar, which has always been his instrumental mainstay. He further digressed from previous songwriting patterns by looking at each track individually and then tailoring the instrumentation to bring each song to life in its own distinctive way.

WATCH, LISTEN AND SHARE ’Alone But Not Alone’: https://youtu.be/-b4x714ZnKA
You can purchase the track here: http://smarturl.it/TheWavesTheWake

When asked about the new song, Dekker replied, “’Alone But Not Alone’ is a straighter shooter than some of the other tracks on the new album, with a little more of a familiar 12-string jangle, and it’s sort of a bridge back across our fifteen-year, seven-album catalogue. We set out to make a breezy, 1960’s AM radio inspired kind of thing, with a few twists and turns, because it seemed to be what the song was asking for, in the midst of experimenting with sounds for some of the other new songs. As for the lyrics, sometimes it can be easy to find yourself in a crowded place but still feel utterly alone. This song is a reflection on that sense of suffocating connectedness while still feeling disconnected at the same time. In the end it’s a pretty lonely place, but there’s a resolve to keep an open heart and mind”

In addition to the already announced Canadian dates, Great Lake Swimmers will be playing special advance shows in Los Angeles and New York this July. The first two will be in LA on July 15th (KCRW DJ Gary Calamar’s Mimosa Series at The Federal in North Hollywood) and 16th (School Night at Bardot in Hollywood), followed by an NYC show on July 31st at The Standard Hotel East Village presented by Annie O. as part of their Standard Sounds Series. The band also announced today a run of U.S shows for August, October and November that will be capped off with a special hometown performance in Toronto on November 23rd at the Danforth Music Hall. A full list of current dates can be found below. Check out www.greatlakeswimmers.com for the latest routing as European shows will be announced soon.

The new record is preceded by a six track EP titled Side Effects that was released on April 13th and features new songs “The Talking Wind”, “Falling Apart” and “Side Effects,” as well as fan favourites “Your Rocky Spine”, “Quiet Your Mind” and “I Became Awake”. 2018 the marks the 15th anniversary the JUNO nominated, Polaris Prize shortlisted group.
