Third Instalment of Great Lake Swimmers' China Blog2010.02.05

Jan 11, 2010 - 11:15am
Yesterday we traveled from Wuhan to the city of Shanghai, the latter of which is known as “The Pearl of the Orient.” The venue we played at is called Yuyintang and has the reputation of being the most important live music venue in Shanghai. It was an honour to have a concert there and as we stepped inside I was quickly impressed.

Coming in from the airport we were told that we were most likely the first western band to travel the new express highway, which had only opened to traffic the day before. It was built in anticipation of the crowds that will converge on the city for the World Expo, which starts in May. There are a number of remarkable exhibition buildings in the distance.

Before the show we had a photo shoot and interview with one of the major Chinese music magazines, Hit Music. The amount of high-level media attention has been really encouraging. The coverage in the English entertainment magazines Time Out Shanghai as well as Time Out Beijing has brought a lot of English-speaking foreigners out to the shows, but it's the large number of Chinese residents in attendance at that I'm most impressed with, as is our tour promoter. It’s also interesting to note that we were introduced to a promoter who recently had fellow Canadian bands Fucked Up and DOA in China for tours.

When the doors finally opened, a steady stream of people filed in. For a Sunday night I wasn’t sure what to expect, but from the feeling in the room and the shoulder to shoulder crowd, it already seemed like the night was a success. And clearly, it was to be the best show of the tour for us, with an extraordinarily enthusiastic but attentive crowd. It’s amazing to me that there was such a great audience for us in this part of the world. Afterwards, we were taken out to the Bund, a great neighbourhood in Shanghai. In a bar there, we discovered that they had a CD by our Canadian brothers The Russian Futurists in their play list, which quickly became the soundtrack to our evening.

GLS---Forbidden-City

Jan 12, 2010 - 2:00pm
Today was our last day in China, and I’m so appreciative that we were able to fit in a visit to the Forbidden City. It is a hugely complex and ornate imperial palace, and former home to the Emperor of China. It has to be seen to be believed. Our trip there yesterday after returning to Beijing was also followed by a giant farewell dinner, where we shot some ad hoc footage, using two digital cameras, that could very well turn into a video for our song “Everything Is Moving So Fast.” As the words of the song imply, this trip was over too soon. It’s been extremely insightful and rewarding, and I feel that we’ve been able to have a true exchange of cultures and ideas the way I had hoped. With any luck, we’ll be able to return again soon to see our new friends in China.

We had a wonderful time!

P.S.
Special Thanks to Al Di (AL D TV), Jesse at Icon Promotions, and Phil Klygo at (weewerk) for working hard to put it all together for us.

"I Will Never See The Sun" by Great Lake Swimmers. Featured in Short Film by Anita Doron - Debuts @ TIFF!2009.09.15

"Shooting inside the Toronto Transit Commission system is actually not as difficult as it might seem: TTC brass are quite welcoming to film-makers, their policies as reasonable to navigate as the Bloor-Danforth line. But how to make the subway magic, to capture the ethereal beauty of a Great Lake Swimmers song? Director Anita Doron knew what to do, and it involved taking Tony Dekker in an unexpected direction, dimension." - Anitra Doron

Polaris Music Prize Nominee's Great Lake Swimmers
Prepare For US Fall Tour2009.08.12

0809pressrelease

The Great Lake Swimmers are currently enjoying buzz-band status this summer as they tour their native Canada’s festival circuit. Having been chosen for the Short List of the esteemed 2009 Polaris Music Prize, the band joins a list of previous nominees that includes Arcade Fire, Broken Social Scene and Feist, among others. The Edmonton Journal proclaimed, “Great Lake Swimmers are fast becoming a bold new voice in Canadian folk music… Dekker is already seen as a powerful songsmith, one that belongs up there among some of Canada's classic voices like Cohen and Lightfoot.”

The group will continue it’s hot streak throughout the US this fall, starting with a string of choice Radio festival events in August and continuing with headline dates through October.

From being interviewed by NBC’s Brian Williams to performing at Bob Boilen’s Tiny Desk on NPR, the accolades continue to roll in for Great Lake Swimmers and their latest album Lost Channels. “The band's songs alternately rise and fall, prickle and soften, offering a comforting yet stirring refuge from the daily grind.” – The Washington Post.

A new milestone was reached last week when YouTube featured the Swimmers on their front page. Choosing a live song the band released this summer from their “Legion Sessions” series, the video has quickly shot to over 100,000 views. Check out the stunning track “Stealing Tomorrow”.

TALL SHIPS LANDING PRESENTS GREAT LAKE SWIMMERS AT MASTS, MOTORS & MUSIC CONCERT JUNE 62009.05.14

Tall Ships Landing is honoured that Great Lake Swimmers will be presenting a complimentary concert in support of the Maritime Discovery Centre of the 1000 Islands in Brockville on Saturday, June 6th. The Toronto band is currently on an international tour promoting their new album "Lost Channels". The album was recorded in and named for the 1000 Islands, which they have come to greatly appreciate. Tracks were recorded at Singer Castle, St. Brendan's Church in Rockport and the Brockville Arts Centre.

Their tour has brought attention to the region in cities across Europe including Brussels, Paris, London and Madrid. The free concert will coincide with a day of racing at the 2nd annual Thousand Islands International Regatta and Festival on the city's waterfront. The public is invited to Tall Ships Landing to enjoy the free concert, which also includes an opening performance from Brockville's Healy & Orr. It starts at 2:30 p.m. with the St. Andrew Street gates opening at 2:00.

Bytown Brigantine's tall ship Fair Jeanne, which provides adventure voyages, will serve as a floating stage for the concert prior to her departure for an international tall ship festival in Halifax.

Thousand Islands photographer Ian Coristine contacted the band to suggest they record in the area after hearing their music on CBC radio's Vinyl Café Coristine, a member of the Maritime Discovery Centre's steering committee, said it's an honour that the Great Lake Swimmers will return to the Thousand Islands to celebrate the city's riverfront revival and the album they recorded here.

"When I first heard their haunting folk/rock music I was captivated and figured that sound might make a perfect match to the beauty of this area, so suggested they come to discover it. They did and the rest of the story is still being written. It was terrifically gratifying when Tony Dekker, the band's lead musician shared with me how deeply impressed he was by his Thousand Islands experience. The fact he named the album 'Lost Channels' and that they are coming here straight from Madrid after a grueling international tour says it all."

Great Lake Swimmers & audiotransparent Present a Unique and Limited 7" Vinyl Release2009.04.29

Great Lake Swimmers along with special friends, audiotransparent, present a unique and limited 7" vinyl release from www.katzwijm.com & (weewerk)

Check this out! www.audiotransparent.com/single

This four song, double split 7" vinyl album comes packaged in a beautiful handmade triple-gatefold sleeve, with artwork by lenxxx.

It all started when the bands met while touring the Netherlands. Erik gave some banjo lessons and Tony invited audiotransparent to sleep at his place while touring in Canada. After recording the audiotransparent song "You Are A Movie" together, the idea for a split single was born. Beside this co-operation, you get an Elvis Presley cover, "Don't Be Cruel", and the newly written song "Send Me A Letter", which was written for and is also featured on the Canadian "Friends Of Bellwoods II" benefit compilation release for The Daily Food Bank in Toronto.

audiotransparent contributes a new interpretation of the seventies love song "Never Let Her Slip Away" by Andrew Gold, as well as the wonderful song "You Are A Movie", featuring T.Dekker on duet vocals.

Great Lake Swimmers Present Palmistry From The Legion Sessions2009.04.27

During the month of February 2009, while the city of Toronto was busy battling against the wind, snow and all around miserable conditions that keep residents firmly indoors as often as possible, the Great Lake Swimmers decided to hunker down in one of their country's most esteemed locations, a Royal Canadian Legion Pub. Soon dubbed "The Legion Sessions", GLS chose the hallowed local in-which to capture live, many of the new songs from their freshly minted new album Lost Channels. The group enlisted the help of gifted young director Scott Cudmore to create a raw and intimate window into the subtle power of the group's sound. On board capturing the music resonating within these cozy surroundings was none other than Graham Walsh from the experimental electronic group Holy F**k.

In celebration of all the great support that Great Lake Swimmers have received around the release of their new album Lost Channels, we are posting the very first video from this fantastic series, fittingly the first song from the album "Palmistry".

And for anyone out there who hasn't picked up Lost Channels, exciting news; the acclaimed new album is available now for only $2.99 TODAY as the Amazon Daily Deal. Click here to purchase it now on AmazonMP3.

"A spellbinding mix of country-tinged melancholy and a poetic economy that resists saccharin statements, or maudlin indulgence, the ghostly voice of lead Swimmer, Tony Dekker crosses vast oceans of loneliness and undercurrents of heartache to impressive effect... Amidst such up-tempo sunshine there's moments of an altogether darker splendour." - BBC

"Lost Channels... dips into new territory, forgoing pretty but plain melodies in favor of more key changes and greater instrumental variety. "Pulling on a Line" exemplifies Great Lake Swimmers' beautiful simplicity..." - NPR

"The group has a gentle, vulnerable sound that is most notable in the high-pitched, aching voice of the front man Tony Dekker, who recalls another Ontarian, Neil Young." - THE NEW YORKER

"There are very few voices in this world that cut as deeply as Tony Dekker's, and if any could fill up a hollow place, it would be his. Perhaps seeking that very thing, the Swimmers have done fragile, nostalgia-tinged odes to near aural perfection by paving rapt attention to acoustic reverberations." - FILTER

"On (Lost Channels) the pristine intonations and detailed lyrical threads of Tony Dekker are surrounded by flute, guitar, drums, bass, pedal steel, (and) other voices." - STEREOGUM

Great Lake Swimmers - “Lost Channels” Release Date March 31st, 2009

Great Lake SwimmersFifty-five years ago, Marilyn Bell took a plunge and traversed Lake Ontario. Back then, being a Great Lake swimmer was a big deal; now, it's an astonishing physical feat taken for granted. It's a rapidly forgotten part of history, like a faded map or a tattered photograph. Or a lost channel. Tony Dekker's Great Lake Swimmers have spent the past seven years performing on stages around the world—though, like Bell, they should never be taken for granted. LOST CHANNELS, their fourth album set for release on March 31st, finds them once again recording at historic locations. This time in the Thousand Islands region of Ontario and New York state, telling tales of hidden histories, still "mining for light in the dark wells," still "tuned to an instrument of greater and unknown design." The instrument in question is the singular voice of Tony Dekker, a voice that summons ghosts from times past. It’s a voice that is capable of conveying heartache and comfort all in the space of a single phrase. Though his supporting cast has changed over the years—with the exception of longtime right-hand man Erik Arnesen—Dekker has always encircled him self with sympathetic players who value spacious arrangements that frame his vocals. Over time, the band has evolved from a sparse, delicate and hushed unit into a well-rounded folk rock band, sacrificing none of their original intimacy while upping both the volume and tempos when necessary. Dekker chooses to record in old churches, community halls, abandoned grain silos and rural locations. It's easy to hear why. His voice doesn't need any studio embellishment, standing at its strongest when bathed in natural reverb and enriched by the historical context surrounding it.

To record LOST CHANNELS, Dekker and company went upstream on the St. Lawrence River to the Thousand Islands, halfway between Toronto and Montreal, a historic and picturesque area that straddles the Canadian/American border, and has been designated a World Biosphere Region. Great Lake Swimmers arrived at the invitation of fan and Thousand Islands photographer/regional historian Ian Coristine (www.1000islandsphotoart.com).

Coristine was able to arrange for the band to record in a number of acoustically unique spaces within the region, including one of the area's most storied landmarks, Singer Castle on Dark Island, near Hammond, NY (www.singercastle.com); as well as the historical Brockville Arts Centre (www.brockvilleartscentre.com); and at St. Brendan’s Church in Rockport, ON.

Additional recording took place at Halla and the Lincoln County Social Club in Toronto and the album was woven into a cohesive whole at the House Of Miracles, in London, ON, with long-time Great Lake Swimmers collaborator, Andy Magoffin.

That the album was created in both rural splendour and urban Ontario makes perfect sense for a band that has always navigated the parallels between natural and urban rhythms. River imagery recurs throughout LOST CHANNELS; the title of the album is a reference to a certain passage of the St. Lawrence, close to the recording locale, where a reconnaissance boat from a British warship went mysteriously missing in 1760. There’s no specific reference to the incident in the lyrics, though there are plenty of night skies, howling winds and raging rivers in almost every song which captures an elusive sense of mystery. As the album closes, Dekker sings the final lyrics—“Like the unstoppable river… Your beauty is gentle/ but forceful, and fast”—before the band ends on a suspended note. There is no resolution there, only eternity, a continuum, an endless river.

LOST CHANNELS also features the talents of Julie Fader (flute/backing vocals), Greg Millson (drums), Darcy Yates (bass), with appearances by Erin Aurich on violin; Mike Olsen on cello; and Paul Aucoin on vibraphone; along with special guests / Swimmers collaborators Serena Ryder with vocals on “Everything Is Moving So Fast” and Bob Egan on pedal steel.

Four albums into an already-rich and storied career, Great Lake Swimmers’ live show has won them ever-expanding audiences in the United States and Europe, and of course their native Canada. In 2008 Great Lake Swimmers shared the stage with an impressive list of artists, including Feist, Bela Fleck & The Sparrow Quartet, Hayden, Goldfrapp, Bill Callahan of Smog, and Robert Plant & Alison Krauss.

Great Lake Swimmers Announce New Album, Tour Dates

Canadian folkies Great Lake Swimmers had a busy summer. They've been touring since May, mostly north of the border, including one date when they opened for Robert Plant and Alison Krauss in GLS's hometown of Toronto. They performed at charity concerts and focused on building community. But when Tony Dekker wasn't busy scoring a documentary, paying homeage to Canadian concrete, or playing drill sergeant in folk boot camp, Great Lake Swimmers began creating new material. Nettwerk just announced the anticipated release of the band's fourth album, set for early Spring 2009.

They're also gearing up for the premiere of the Great Lake Swimmers HD Concert Special, which was filmed last September in Toronto. On Nov. 5, the hour-long episode will be screened at select Cineplex Odeon Theaters (all in Canada), alongside the Joel Plaskett Emergency Concert Special. In the meantime, they've worked in a handful of concert dates. The four U.S. performances will take place later this month, in New York and Massachussetts. The band will play Canada during the month leading up to their big-screen debut. - Paste Magazine
